Meet 'The Blobs': Two Continent-Size Mountains in Earth's Deep Mantle That Nobody Understands


Near the bottom of Earth's mantle lie two continent-sized blobs of hot, compressed rock. They are called large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) because seismic waves slow down as they pass through them, but geologists usually just call them "the blobs."

Geophysicists have known about the blobs since the 1970s but aren't much closer to understanding them today.

"They're among the largest things inside the Earth," University of Maryland geologist Ved Lekic told Eos reporter Jenessa Duncombe, "and yet we literally don't know what they are, where they came from, how long they've been around, or what they do."

This much is evident: The blobs begin thousands of miles below Earth's surface, where the planet's rocky lower mantle meets the molten outer core. One blob lurks deep below the Pacific Ocean, the other beneath Africa and parts of the Atlantic. Both are massive, stabbing up about halfway through the mantle and measuring as long as continents. According to Duncombe, each blob stretches about 100 times higher than Mount Everest; if they sat on the planet's surface, the International Space Station would have to navigate around them.

Greenland's fastest-flowing and fastest-thinning glacier recently threw a real brain bender at scientists, who realized that instead of shrinking, the glacier is actually growing thicker, they reported in a new study.

The glacier — known as Jakobshavn, which sits on Greenland's west coast — is still contributing to sea level rise, but it's losing less ice than expected. Instead of thinning and retreating inland, its ice is thickening and advancing toward the ocean, the researchers found.

The big question: Why is this happening?

After much sleuthing, a team of scientists from the United States and the Netherlands found that the glacier is likely growing due to colder ocean currents. In 2016, a current that passes by Jakobshavn Glacier was cooler than usual, making waters near the glacier the coldest they'd been since the mid-1980s.

This cooler current came from the North Atlantic Ocean, more than 600 miles (966 kilometers) south of the glacier, according to data from NASA's Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG) mission and other observations.

The finding took the scientists completely by surprise. "At first, we didn't believe it," study lead researcher Ala Khazendar, a scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement. "We had pretty much assumed that Jakobshavn would just keep going on as it had over the last 20 years." But the cold water isn't a one-off. Data from OMG shows that the water has been cold now for three years in a row.

But, as mentioned, the glacier is still contributing to ocean level rise worldwide, as it's still losing more ice to the ocean than it is gaining from snow accumulation, the researchers said.

The supermassive black hole lurking at the center of our galaxy appears to have a lot of company, according to a new study that suggests the monster is surrounded by about 10,000 other black holes.

"So we're looking at the very, very, very center of our galaxy. It's a place that's filled with a huge amount of gas and dust, and it's jammed with a huge number of stars," Hailey says.

What they found there: a dozen black holes paired up with stars, according to a report in the journal Nature.

Finding so many in such a small region is significant, because until now scientists have found evidence of only about five dozen black holes throughout the entire galaxy, says Hailey, who points out that our galaxy is 100,000 light-years across. (For reference, one light-year is just under 5.88 trillion miles.)

What's more, the very center of our galaxy surely has far more than these dozen black holes that were just detected. The researchers used what's known about black holes to extrapolate from what they saw to what they couldn't see. Their calculations show that there must be several hundred more black holes paired with stars in the galactic center, and about 10,000 isolated black holes.

Aantal daklozen in tien jaar meer dan verdubbeld

Het Leger des Heils ziet verschillende oorzaken voor de toename van het aantal daklozen. De mensen die daar worden opgevangen blijven langer, waardoor er weinig doorstroming is. Gemiddeld blijven ze 13 maanden, omdat ze geen betaalbare woning kunnen vinden.

Ook zijn er minder plaatsen beschikbaar voor mensen die beschermd zouden moeten wonen. Verder is het aantal plaatsen in GGZ-instellingen afgenomen. Daarnaast gaan gedetineerden sneller naar buiten, ziet het Leger des Heils. Vervolgens is ook voor hen vaak geen betaalbare woning beschikbaar, waardoor ze op straat terechtkomen.

De stijging van het aantal jongere daklozen komt volgens de hulporganisatie vooral door een wijziging in het jeugdstelsel. De jeugdhulpverlening houdt op als een jongere 18 wordt. Dat moment blijkt vaak te vroeg om op eigen benen te kunnen staan.

vond ik ook opvallend. Maar ook in NL wordt veel verzwegen. Er was ooit die enorme olieramp van BP in ik geloof Mexicaanse golf. 11 jr geleden ofzo. Dik halfjaar later was het kantje boord op Noordzee. Vernam ik via mn werk. Heeft nergens in de krant gestaan...
