Norway goes to the polls on Monday after an unusually close-fought and polarised election dominated by the cost of living, wealth taxes, oil fund investment in Israel and relations with Donald Trump.

There has been a surge in support for the populist rightwing Progress party led by Sylvi Listhaug, in what has been described by some as “the Maga-fication” of Norwegian politics. In the event of a rightwing victory, Listhaug could become prime minister.

But according to polls, the most probable result is a narrow win for the centre-left, meaning a likely continuation of the minority Labour government led by Jonas Gahr Støre, who has been prime minister since 2021, with the former Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg, one of Norway’s most popular politicians, as finance minister.

If, however, Labour does win they could face drawn out negotiations with smaller leftwing parties, particularly over oil fund investment in Israel, which has led to Stoltenberg coming under heavy scrutiny in recent weeks.

Het lijkt er inderdaad op dat de nieuwe tegencultuur (extreem)rechts is - of in ieder geval een groot deel ervan. Ook dat is denk ik een vorm van zich afzetten tegen de gevestigde orde. Hetzelfde zie je ook op religieus gebied: juist jongeren vertonen een hang naar dogmatisch en fundamentalistisch christendom.

The report, based on polling in 13 countries, identifies several distinct groups. The largest (28%) are the Euro-hawks, who no longer see the US as an ally, back increased national defence spending, and take a broadly positive stance towards today’s EU.

Euro-doves (21% overall) are equally sober about the US and attached to the EU, but do not support more defence spending. Atlanticists (12%) tend to still consider the US an ally, while Renegades (15%) reject everything: US, EU and more defence spending.

Nationalists (12%), meanwhile, do not believe much in the EU or see the US as an ally, but support more military spending, while the smallest group, the Trumpists (5% overall), still see the US as their ally, and are generally not much in favour of the EU.

These groups, the authors write, are present in different proportions in different countries and among different political camps: Euro-doves, for example, are most plentiful in Spain and Italy; Renegades among supporters of the populist left; nationalists among the populist far right.

The Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, has said that he will allow the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) into government for the first time – and give its members key ministerial posts – if his coalition wins the next general election.

Despite becoming Sweden’s second biggest political party after the Social Democrats in the last election, SD currently plays only a supporting role in the minority-run coalition.

But Kristersson, who leads the centre-right Moderates, said on Wednesday that if his four-party coalition won September’s election, SD would hold “big political influence and important ministerial posts within immigration and integration”.
